Everyone has a favorite time of year...winter, summer, spring or fall. In this neck-of-the-woods it’s winter for snowmobilers and farmers tired from a busy time planting, spaying and harvesting their crops.
Most adults prefer the warming sun’s rays of spring, when apple blossoms are full and their fragrance is captivating. (It also a favorite among those who like to hit one of our 10,000 lakes for walleyes, crappies and northerns.)

Is the goal of this administration’s expansion of executive branch mandates, to destroy small businesses? If that is the case, they’re succeeding. Earlier this week a regional restaurant announced that it is closing its doors on Sunday. Yep, quitting. The owner claims they are unable to hire qualifi ed staff to run the popular eatery. Others have claimed that COVID-19 caused economic problems as well.

Did you feel the coolness when you left the house last Thursday? Our weather’s beginning to change from the dog days of summer to the crispness of Canadian fronts pushing into our neck of the woods.
With Labor Day behind us and Marigold Days this weekend, there’ll be plenty of family fun for those who’ve anxiously put COVID-19 behind them. The quiet village of Mantorville will come alive with activities.

Most of our summer consisted of hot, humid sunny days, great for kids and adults who were able to spend those days at a swimming pool.
Last Wednesday there were children with their adult supervisors at the Mantorville Dam fishing, playing on the rocks and there was actually water flowing over the dam. A week earlier only a trickle of water could be seen breeching the dam.

Summer has been great for corn and soybean growth (occasionally, one could hear corn stalks groan as they shot skyward). It’s also been a tremendous summer for kids, moms and dads at the Kasson Aquatic Center, Byron’s pool, West Concord’s recently upgraded facility and the pool in Dodge Center. It was a great way for kids and adults claiming to be kids, to spend the summer’s hot, humid days.
