Corn and inflation are rising at a breakneck speed. Corn is nearing the height it normally is at July 4 – knee-high. Inflation is nearing an eight-year high of 4 percent. Couple that with higher gas prices, meat increases, and one gets a bleak look into the future as the world digs out from pandemic chaos.

Corn is screaming in the field as hot weather invades southeastern Minnesota and causes a growth surge following our cool, wet May weather.
Corn that was only a few inches a week or so ago is now a foot or more tall. It’s crazy to watch the surge. Who knows, corn may reach “knee high by July 4” if things continue to heat up and nature chips in with it a bit of rain.

Graduation is over, the Twins are clawing their way out of last place and we’ve had enough rain to stave off a draught at least until mid-summer.
May was, and usually is, an extremely busy month. Yes, there are graduation ceremonies (as opposed to the 2020 awkward commencement) and some had the traditional graduation parties.

Hundreds of Dodge County and Byron high school seniors will receive their diploma during graduation ceremonies beginning tomorrow. Most, if not all, of the graduating seniors will march into the stadium, auditorium or gymnasium to the music of Pomp & Circumstance.
This has been a part of American graduations dating back to the 1900s.

I read with interest the recent column by Sheriff Scott Rose, “Stop demonizing our law enforcement” (DCI- May 6 edition). His politically charged piece chastises Governor Tim Walz, questioning “what has our Minnesota Governor done to support law enforcement?”

Those of us who lived during the 1970s remember the shameful resignation of Richard M. Nixon from the presidency due to a break-in of the National Democratic headquarters offices at Watergate.
