Katherine Elaine Breza, 70, of Kasson, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2017 at HCMC in Minneapolis. She was born July 23, 1946 to Wallace and Hazel (Hokenstrom) Weberg in Red Wing. She attended Red Wing Central High school. After school she went to work at First State Bank in Red Wing and later the State of Minnesota and Winona National Bank before she married Steve Breza of Winona, on May 17, 1969 at the Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing.

As the race to be atop of the Big Nine Conference heats up, the Owatonna girls basketball team played host to Rochester Mayo Tuesday night.
After the first half, it was looking like a game to forget for the Huskies.
Despite managing to claw back from an 18-point deficit at the half, the Huskies were unable to complete the comeback, falling to the Spartans 52-41 Tuesday night at OHS.

In the biggest matchup of the season and against the best team the Owatonna boys basketball team has faced thus far in Rochester John Marshall, the Huskies were simply outplayed in every facet of the game.
With a trio of Rockets reaching double figures, Rochester John Marshall coasted to a 97-61 win over the Huskies to remain perfect in the Big Nine Conference.

At this time last season, the Owatonna was hoping to qualify as a team for the state tournament, only to have those hopes dashed by Faribault in the section semifinals.
While it wasn’t for a bid to the state tournament, a Big Nine Conference championship and a presumed top-seed for the section tournament were on the line Thursday night.
The Huskies would relish the moment.

Members of the Mantorville Chamber of Commerce elected new board officers at their meeting Feb 1 including President, Bob Soland, Vice President, Melanie Dobson, Secretary, Paul Larsen, and Treasurer, Lynnette Nash. 
The group also discussed the schedule of events for the coming year. They had held a workshop Jan 18 and drafted the plan.

For years, Doug Claassen suffered a life-changing, career ending spinal injury from a violent suspect he was trying to arrest. Though he died 18 years ago, his sacrifice had largely gone unnoticed publicly until recently.
“He had a lot of pain and struggles for years,” said Claassen’s widow, Kathy, of Kasson. “It was unbelievable.”

During the Rochester Area Sports Banquet on January 30, Brady Berge sat at a table as the Male Athlete of the Year award was about to be announced. Earlier in the night, the Kasson-Mantorville wrestling team had been well represented, but hadn’t taken home any hardware as head coach Jamie Heidt was nominated for Coach of the Year and the KoMets were nominated for team of the year. 

While the sport of powerlifting is beginning to grow nationally, it’s still a sport that’s in its infancy when it comes to high school competition in Minnesota. The Kasson-Mantorville powerlifting team knows this all too well as they’ve traveled to Wisconsin for a majority of its schedule for each of the past two seasons.
