Byron Student Council to host Winter Carnival

Looking for a local event this month for the family?
If so, you might be in luck.
On Feb. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Byron High School Student Council will be hosting a Winter Carnival, at the high school.

I Was Thinking... It’s About Time!

“Well, it’s about time.” Those few words are often expressed when we start doing something that someone else felt should have been done quite some time ago. Procrastination is a malady afflicting many retired people. What we don’t get done today we can always do tomorrow or the next day. The urgency of deadlines became somewhat diminished when we didn’t have to go to work every day. After all, we have all the time in the world, or do we?

Dean’s Honor Roll at Abilene Christian
Abilene Christian University has named Heather Haselius of Kasson to the Fall 2024 Dean’s Honor Roll. Haselius is a sophomore English major.
Haselius is among more than 1,800 students named to the Fall 2024 Dean’s Honor Roll.

Ride for Wyatt set for Feb. 8

Now in its sixth year, the Ride for Wyatt snowmobile fundraiser in Mantorville is scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 8 but again this year — like last year — will adjust since there likely won’t be adequate snowfall for snowmobiling. Still, there’s plenty of fun to be had, said organizer Matt Coy.

SMIF seeking applications for Early Literacy Grants

Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF), in partnership with publishing companies Capstone and ABDO, is accepting applications for its Early Literacy Grant program. This grant is designed to support early literacy efforts that enhance school readiness for children birth to age eight by providing children with books.

Peterson earns Farm Bureau ag award

Collin Peterson, former congressional leader from Minnesota, and former Kentucky Farm Bureau President Mark Haney, are the recipients of the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 2025 Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award and Farm Bureau Founders Award, respectively. The DSA and Founders Award are the highest honors presented by AFBF.

Everyday Hero

KM Lion Todd Halverson was presented the “Everyday Hero Award” at the 5M1 Lions MidWinter Convention held in Rochester in January. Todd was selected by the KM Lion club members as the member who has helped in a variety of ways with many project activities and represented the KM club at the convention. Each of the over 50 clubs in the 5M1 District (SE Minnesota) is eligible to select a club member for this award annually.
