I Was Thinking . . . Measuring Up

Rankings seem to be an important part of our society. Sports pages must have the standings, who is on top and how far behind other teams are. We keep score so we know who wins and who loses. And to some, unless you win the championship, you didn’t have a successful season.

Zumbro Valley Golf Course

The Zumbro Valley Golf Course is located between Mantorville and Kasson on County Road 15, east of Highway 57. I’m going to tell you something that most people don’t know. You do not have to be a member of the golf club to use the club house. Anyone can stop in and have a drink or a snack at the Bunker Bar, whether they are a member or not. In addition to beer, wine, and mixed drinks, they sell pizza and hot dogs.

Dodge County commissioners are asking right questions

Another successful Marigold Days, looking ahead to Homecoming

It turned out to be a great weekend in Mantorville. I was a little bit concerned on Friday afternoon when the skies opened up and it started to rain.
My immediate concern was that the Cambodian dance group that was scheduled to perform outside at the County Seat Coffeehouse in Mantorville would have to cancel. And then, that the rain would continue all weekend and spoil Marigold Days.

Lessons from 9/11

There are some dates that are etched into our collective memory. Those are dates you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when some event happened.
For those of my generation it was November 22, 1963, the day that President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Tex. For my parents, it was December 6, 1941, when the American fleet was attacked at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

I Was Thinking . . . Beginnings and Ends

September is often a starting time. Kids return to classrooms, athletic events begin, and churches change to their fall schedule. But September also signals the beginning of the end. Although we are bound to have some more warm days, we also know our summer weather is about done.
