August brings new laws

As we head into the dog days of summer, several new laws take effect this week. The laws impacting newlyweds, minimum wage earners and drug offenders are coming into play after being passed by the Minnesota Legislature earlier this year.  
I’d like to give readers a brief rundown of the new laws going into effect so that we can all keep from getting into trouble.

The Kasson-Mantorville boys basketball team is in a period of transition this summer as Terry Pederson takes over for Kelly Raymond as the head coach. While some of the things are a work in progress under Pederson, the KoMets have responded well and had a solid showing at a tournament in Winona last weekend with a pair of victories.

The K-M Blue Diamonds were recognized on Friday afternoon for their outstanding sportsmanship with the Youth 1st Team Sportsmanship Award for their conduct during a tournament in Owatonna last month. 

Cyclists stop in West Concord on the hottest day of the year

It was one of the hottest and most humid days of the summer when the group of nearly 40 bicyclists pedaled into West Concord.

Claremont ready for Saturday’s Hogfest events

Organizers of Claremont’s annual Hogfest celebration say some changes made for this year will make the annual event more family friendly and fun than ever.
The event kicks off Saturday morning at 8 a.m. with a 5K Fun Run/Walk and coed volleyball, human foosball and coed softball tournaments at 8 a.m. and continuing throughout the day and evening concluding with a 9 p.m. movie in the park.

Dennis Yell, 71, Mentor, Minn.

Dennis Yell, 71, died Friday, July 29, 2016, at his Mentor, Minn., home under the care of his family and Hospice.

VeeAnn Carlson, 75, Spring Valley

VeeAnn M. Carlson, 75, died on Wednesday (July 27, 2016) of natural causes at Spring Valley Senior Living, where she had been a resident since October of last year.  She was a long-time rural Rochester resident.

Donald Blaeser, 88, West Concord

Donald “Sam” L. Blaeser, 88, of West Concord, died Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at the Cottagewood Senior Community in Rochester.
