Kasson-Mantorville wrestler Brady Berge has generated plenty of headlines during his wrestling career, but it might be fitting that he claimed one last accolade before heading to Penn State next fall. Last week, Berge added another trinket to his trophy case as he was named the recipient of the 2017 Mr. Minnesota High School Wrestler Award.

The little lady at the convenience store counter sized me up, looked at me shrewdly  for a few seconds.
 “How many cats do you have?”
How many cats?
Oh. She’d seen the bag of kitty litter I’d lugged up to the counter.
Two, I said.
She was quiet again.
“I had a cat,” she said. “He was named Charlie.”

No sooner had the ink dried on our newspaper and the ques-tion came firing at us: Why did you publish public salaries?
A few weeks ago we pub-lished a rundown of the highest salaries of public officials in Dodge County. In addition,we printed a complete list of all employees showing their monthly salaries for those working for county govern-ment.
The natural question direct-ed at us was, Why did we do this?

It’s another weekday morning, and the usual good-natured barbs are flying at Daniel’s Restaurant in Kasson.
Folmer Carlsen, 83, notes that he moved to town in 1963 and purchased the Dodge County Independent when it was located downtown, near what’s now Buffet King.
The former Kasson mayor, who ran the DCI for 33 years, says he’s been drinking coffee at Daniel’s ever since.

Mankato – After facing a 13-point deficit in the first half, Maddie Wagner hit a deep trey to spark a run for the NRHEG girls basketball team. Her sister, Marnie, turned the spark into an explosion.

Mankato – In the last three meetings this season, the NRHEG boys basketball team beat Maple River a combined 207-143.
While Thursday night's 2AA Sub-Section semifinal game may have not been the Panthers’ prettiest performance, they were able to get the job done.

Lakeville – For the first few minutes of its Section 1-AAAA quarterfinal game against Lakeville South, the Owatonna boys basketball team was just a lone possession from taking the lead.
Then, the fourth-seeded Cougars generated a steal and never looked back.
