Then and Now

In 1905, the First State Bank of Mantorville opened and was in the stone building along Main Street. It closed for good in 1932 when the stock market crashed, depression occurred, and many banks across the country failed. In 1977, Citizens State Bank and Marquette Bank of Rochester opened their branches in Mantorville. In 1980, Citizens Bank bought out Marquette Bank and took over their building, and they moved from a trailer house.

Minnesota transplant discovers he’s connected after all

As many readers of the paper know, I am not from Minnesota, and instead from Rhode Island, a state that takes the same time to go from one end of it to the other as it does from Rochester to Owatonna.

One of the things I have enjoyed most about my 18-year tenure as president and CEO of Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) is visiting with entrepreneurs when I travel across our region. At SMIF we support talented entrepreneurs with early-stage investments, loans, technical assistance, mentoring, networks, events and more.
