Carnival rides, fair food and entertainment may not be the only things greeting fairgoers at this year’s Steele County Fair. A smoking ban may be added to that list if one group gets its way.

I’ve mentioned them several times over the past month or so but once again the cast and crew of the Triton One Act Play deserve a mention.

The Corridors of Commerce bill that will include funding for completing work on Highway 14 through Dodge County is moving ahead at the state legislature, area U.S. Highway 14 Partnership members learned recently.
As they visited legislators recently, they were pleased to learn that their bill, HF 282, which funds the Corridors of Commerce program, was slated to be the first bill addressed by the House Transportation Committee.

Members of the cast and crew of Triton’s One Act Play took top honors last week in the Class A One Act Play Festival as they were one of five troupes to earn a “starred performance” rating.
They also received the Spotlight on the Arts Award of Excellence. This is a fine arts recognition award created by Wells Fargo, the League’s premier sponsor in cooperation with the MSHSL.

A woman from the Twin Cities has died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in Steele County.
The State Patrol has identified the victim as Diane Evenson, 66, of Minneapolis. She died at the scene of the crash on I-35 at Hoffman St. in Owatonna Saturday afternoon.

After decades of being home to a variety of businesses and individuals the Claremont Apartments on Main Street now sit silently awaiting their demolition.
The structure is scheduled for demolition by Dodge County. The building was scheduled to be torn down several weeks ago but work was halted the first day when it was discovered there was a still active gas main at the location.

The cast and crew of the one-act play are scheduled to perform tomorrow afternoon at the state finals at O’Shaughnessy Auditorium on the St. Catherine’s University campus in St. Paul.

Gala a resounding success
By all accounts, the annual gala in support of the local Boys and Girls Club proved to be a most satisfying event. Early estimates indicate a profit similar to last year’s $20,000 total.  From the raffle drawings, to the auctions, to the program, to the food provided from the Servicemen’s club Foxhole menu, the large crowd in attendance seemed to have an enjoyable and entertaining evening.

Feedlots again took center stage in Dodge County last week as the county Planning Commission approved changes to the county zoning ordinance. The changes now go to the Dodge County Board for final approval.
The changes deal primarily with the section of the ordinance specifying items needed in the application for a feedlot permit.
