Last weekend’s hockey game between the Dodge County Wildcats and Amery Wildcats featured two teams from opposite sides of the Mississippi River, but even supposed enemies can come together to support a greater cause.
That’s exactly what happened as together they raised over $5,000 for cancer research at Dodge County’s eighth annual Stick it to Cancer game.

Kasson-Mantorville High School Cade Spreiter and Malia Schubert as the 2019 Minnesota State High School League AAA award winners for the 2019-2020 school year.
            The AAA award is awarded to student-athletes who excel in academics, arts, and athletics.

Triton Elementary School honored its December “Heroes” and gave out the December Golden Awards at an assembly last week.
Students who show exceptional behavior and helping others are chosen as Heroes for the month.

As Byron Middle School (BMS) enters a new decade, the students will encounter a new way of learning thanks to a $100,000 grant that the school recently received from the Bush Foundation.

Although final totals were not immediately known, the West Concord American Legion Post and Auxiliary raised in excess of $3,000 at its annual Cancer Telethon breakfast.
Each January the Post has a pancake breakfast with the proceeds from the event being donated to the Eagles Cancer Telethon in Rochester. Legion member Myron Ehrich will present the check to the Eagles this coming weekend.

Billie Cowell was expecting that this past Monday was going to be a rough day at work. It was to be her last day at Triton, a place where she has worked for 26 years.
Cowell started as the head cook at Dodge Center Elementary School. After four years, the company she was working for as cook was replaced by Taher, and she moved to the new company as the head cook.

Second graders at Triton Elementary School spent much of December collecting food items for the Food Shelf in Kasson as part of a Giving Tree unit in their social studies classes.
The students were studying economics and giving as part of the revamped social studies curriculum, said teacher Sarah Stradtmann. During the unit, she said, they learned that giving can include many things such as clothes and food.

Again in 2019 the Dodge County Relay for Life organization ranked among the leaders in the amount of money raised for the American Cancer Society. This is the fourth year the local group has been in the top 10 nationwide.

Some holiday traditions never die off. The red jolly old Saint Nick with the big beard, and yes, sometimes the big belly, is one of them.
Santa Claus has a long history steeped and woven into Christmas traditions with families for centuries. Today, he is thought of mainly as the jolly man in red with a deep “Ho, Ho, Ho,” blurted out who brings toys to good girls and boys on Christmas Eve.
