It’s difficult for any school district to get its elementary, middle school, and high school students working together towards a common goal, but the Kasson-Mantorville school district has done just that through its KoMets versus Cancer series.

After a loss to Lake City earlier last week, the Kasson-Mantorville girls’ basketball team rebounded, literally and metaphorically, by beating Albert Lea 66-37 on Thursday, Jan 16.
            The KoMets jumped out to an early 48-16 lead by half time. 
“K-M used a combination of good full court pressure and defensive rebounding and inside out offense to build the lead,” said Head Coach Ryan Haraldson.

             After beating Triton 55-21 two weeks ago, the Byron wrestling team made it back-to-back wins when they beat Pine Island 54-21 on Thursday, Jan. 16, but they couldn’t make it three in a row as they ran into a buzzsaw, the Kasson-Mantorville KoMets, and lost 23-54 in the second dual of the triangular.

The Dodge County girls’ hockey team ended her three-game losing streak by beating Northfield 3-2, but their next opponent Warroad, second-ranked team in Class 1A, was just too good as they beat the Wildcats 5-0 on Saturday, Jan. 18.

A college basketball game between Iowa State (ISU) and Kansas State (KSU) usually isn’t a big deal in southeastern Minnesota, but it is this year because former KoMet Kristin Scott plays for the Cyclones and former Byron Bear Ayoka Lee plays for the Wildcats.
            Since Lee is a redshirt freshman, this week is their first time playing each other since high school.

It’s a story that many people are familiar with. The Washington Irving story of schoolteacher Ichabod Crane, Katrina, Brom Bones and the townspeople and children of the haunted New England town of Sleepy Hollow.
The Kasson-Mantorville Drama Department will be presenting the one-act version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” as its entry in the upcoming One-Act Play competition.

Seventeen Triton Middle School students gathered at the Middle School Library last week to compete in the district Spelling Bee. Thirteen rounds later, Katya Wheeler and Mya Matejcek placed first and second and earned a trip to the Regional contest on Feb. 11 in Rochester.
The rules for the Bee were quite simple.

Residents from Byron and surrounding area with physical disabilities will soon have a safe place to play thanks to two grants worth $175,000 that the city of Byron was recently awarded. 
The majority of the grant money, $100,000, came from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), while the other $75,000 came from the Otto Bremer Trust.
