Five semi-finalists for the superintendent position at Byron Public Schools were chosen Monday night during a special board meeting. At an earlier regular board meeting Monday, the board gave their official okay to having an operating levy referendum in November.
The semi-finalists to be interviewed this week are:
Dr. Steven Heil, Superintendent, St. James Public Schools
James Menton, Superintendent, BOLD Public Schools

The Claremont Chamber of Commerce donated $8,000 in honor of David Hanson at the Jan. 27 Dodge Center Lions Club meeting. Hanson passed away on Feb. 28.

Every generation has expressions that are unique to their time frame. Idioms come and go as a new group of young people develop their own slang. As a former teacher, I had to try and keep up with the terminology each group of young people developed.

In 1905, the First State Bank of Mantorville opened and was in the stone building along Main Street. It closed for good in 1932 when the stock market crashed, depression occurred, and many banks across the country failed. In 1977, Citizens State Bank and Marquette Bank of Rochester opened their branches in Mantorville. In 1980, Citizens Bank bought out Marquette Bank and took over their building, and they moved from a trailer house.

In November, the state was projected to face a 5.1-billion-dollar deficit for FY 28-29. The new budget forecast was released on March 6th. The surplus for the next biennium has gone down. The new projected deficit for the second biennium has now increased to almost 6 million as shown in the picture below that was shared to us from the state.

Claremont Police Chief Greg Lange got a knock at his door at home shortly after 2 a.m. on July 5, 1988. At the door was a frantic young woman asking for his help — her sister and her boyfriend were fighting, and the boyfriend had a gun. The woman was holding their 5-month-old baby girl at the time. Andrew had fired off a round in the house during their fighting.
