After beating Winona Cotter 41-0 the previous week, the Hayfield Vikings were brought back down to earth by the Fillmore Central Falcons who beat them 37-7 on Friday, Oct. 4.
            Hayfield Head Coach Jeff Snider was proud of how his team played in the first quarter.
“I was really happy with our boys and how they came out to play this week. We had a lot of fire and determination to be successful and our boys believed.”

When two teams, in this case the Byron Bears and the Austin Packers, with the same record, 2-3, face each other it’s usually a close game.
However, last week’s contest proved to be an outlier as Byron throttled Austin 42-13 on Friday, Oct. 4.
            Byron Head Coach Ben Halder said the coaches were impressed by the team’s performance.
            “Yes, we were really happy how we played,” he said.

Every so often the right person is in the right place at the right time and that seems to be case for Amy Stites who was recently hired as principal for the Zumbro Education District (ZED) Area Learning Center (ALC).
            This position allows her to do something she’s been excited about most of her career.
“I’ve always been very interested in alternative education,” she said.

Each month Triton Elementary School gives out a variety of awards to individual students and to classrooms for meeting and going beyond expectations.
Individual Hero Awards for the first month of the school year include:
Kindergarten -- Bentley Kunz, Stella Kispert, Eisen Barghusen, Chelsy  Rodriguez, Maxwell Becker and Adelyn Schnell.

While a game of volleyball between two schools may not seem like a big deal to most high schools, it is for the students at Zumbro Education District (ZED) Area Learning Center (ALC) as they took on the students of the Rochester ALC on Friday, Oct. 4.
Blooming Prairie is a part of the ZED.
Andrew Petersilie, ZED ALC school counselor for the past 14 years, said the tradition started about 10 years ago with flag football.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give blood or platelets to provide hope and healing to patients fighting cancer.
 Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women, and more than 268,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

The seventh grade science students at Triton Middle School got a lesson in invasive species last week in preparation for an ecology project that will have them presenting their findings to the public tomorrow afternoon.

While almost everyone knows about the dangers of smoking, there is less information out there about the dangers of vaping.
As of Oct. 3, The Center for Disease Control said 1,080 cases, including 18 deaths, related to a vaping-related lung disease have reported, up from the 805 cases reported a week earlier.
Most patients had a history of vaping products containing THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

With less than a month until voters in the Triton School District head to the polls to vote on a levy proposal, Superintendent Craig Schlichting has been busy meeting with organizations and groups as well as individuals to get the message out why the district needs the levy.
Voters will decide on Nov. 5 whether or not they will give the school district authorization to raise its referendum revenue authorization by $750 per pupil.
