Poem for America’s 250th

A quarter-millennium, a grand embrace,
Two hundred fifty years in this expansive space.
From thirteen stars, a flag that caught the breeze,
To fifty strong, from mountains to the seas.
Through trials faced,
on fields where shadows fell,
Of freedom’s light, the story we still tell.
With immigrant hands, and spirits born to roam,
We built this house,
and called this Nation home.

I Was Thinking... An unlikely revolt

This week we will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. While most people know what the 4th of July represents, there are also probably some general myths about our storied history.

Meeting Rhode Islanders… In Minneapolis

I was on the light rail from St. Paul to Minneapolis last Friday night, on my way to meet some friends, minding my own business, thinking about what non-alcoholic drink I would order from the bar, as a bunch of us Millenials danced that night.
The train ride is around 45 minutes which, funny enough, is the amount of time it takes to get across my entire home state of Rhode Island.

Thank your community festival organizers

You know the drill.
It is summer time in Minnesota, which means, there are a host of community events and celebrations happening virtually every weekend.
In a couple of weeks the Dodge County Free Fair will be underway.
There are events that have already happened like Dodger Days in Dodge Center, and Chicken Fry weekend in Hayfield.
There are Survivor Days in West Concord, and Good Neighbor Days in Byron.

Dodge Center man sent to prison for sex abuse case

William Patrick Wyttenback, of Dodge Center, spent his 55th birthday in a Dodge County courtroom, where he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexually assaulting a child.
A jury convicted him in March of one count each of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and third-degree criminal sexual conduct. He was found not guilty of a second count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

KM Superintendent:  District is not in financial crisis

Kasson-Mantorville Superintendent Beth Giese is no stranger to the struggles school districts face when it comes to funding.
It was just last year when she and others applied to become the next superintendent of schools.
In Giese’s case, she would’ve loved to continue with her then-employer, the Kenyon-Wanamingo school district.

Board split on proposed levy amount

The Kasson-Mantorville School Board used a June 29 special meeting to put a funding referendum question on the ballot in November, but the 5-2 vote indicates some concerns.
Debate on the referendum, which would stop painful cuts at the district, centered around two options: a $400- or $500-per student levy amount.
