The 10-day 1965 Minnesota State Fair featured the new 330 ft. Space Tower, the Educational Building, and a huge Dance Pavilion in the teen “fair within the fair.” The grandstand shows had Clarinetist Pete Fountain, Motown singer Mary Wells, the Ray Charles Singers, and country singer Roger Miller. Stock car races were held at the grandstand track with the longest one on Labor Day but have not been held since 2002.

Mantorville Theatre Company presents its second student-led production, “Eurydice” by Sara Ruhl. The show runs August 23-25, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mantorville Opera House.

Chateau Speedway suffered race cancellations last weekend when showers shut down the track for the first time since Friday, July 5.
The track will be back in action for its Stinger Attachments Friday Night Racing slate scheduled for Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.

Free Road Maps at State Fair
Now that many oil companies have discontinued giving away road maps, visitors to the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul, August 23-Septemper 2, will be pleased to know they may have a copy of the official 1974 Minnesota highway map for the asking at the Highway Department booth in the state exhibits building on Machinery Hill.

Sherry Whalen, in northwest Kasson, is showing the neighbor’s day care children the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, that she has in various stages in the containers. She has released almost 30 monarchs so far this summer. When she finds an egg on a milkweed plant, she puts the leaf with the egg in a container jar, or the birds may likely eat the larva before they will hatch.
