Wildcats finish third at state
The Dodge County girls hockey team started off the Class A State Tournament last week the same way the tournament ended: with an overtime victory.
The Wildcats first faced off against Proctor/Hermantown. Maysie Koch scored in the first period, followed by Daisy Harens, who knocked in a goal during the second.
After Proctor/Hermantown scored two goals in the second period, neither team scored in the third period, which sent the game into overtime.
In overtime, Taryn Wernecke scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats.
Wildcats goalie Faith Humphrey stopped 24 out of 26 shots in the 3-2 win.
Semifinals
In the semifinals, the Wildcats scored two goals, both in the first period of regulation play in the Class A semifinal game against Warroad.
The teams scored a total of eight goals in a back and forth game, and the Wildcats found themselves trailing by two. With less than two minutes left in the third period and an empty net, the Wildcats came back and scored two more goals to force the game into overtime for the second straight game of the tournament.
But Warroad, who lost in the title game last year, against the Wildcats, had the last laugh, winning 6-5.
Bryn Spreiter finished the game with three goals, and Kylie Meyer and Zoe Heimer each had a goal.
Humphrey stopped 33 shots in the loss.
Third Place Game
The Wildcats didn’t need overtime for their final game against Blake.
After neither team scored a goal in the first period, the Wildcats scored three goals in the second period, with Maysie Koch, Harens, and Wernecke all adding points to the board.
After they gave up a goal in the third period, Maysie Koch came back with the final goal, pushing the score to 4-1.
Humphrey picked up the win stopping 19 out of 20 shots.
