Westfield falls in section semifinals

Westfield wrestling saw its dual season come to a close last week after falling 38-27 on the road to the WEM/JWP Grizzlies.
The Razorbacks started fast with a 6-0 lead courtesy of a second period pin by Elijah Butteris, but couldn’t find the wins it needed in a dual that was close down to the final match.
“Overall, I’m proud of the way our guys competed today and throughout the year,” said Westfield Co-Head Coach David Lassahn after the loss. “This team had a lot of fight today, and we will miss our senior leaders next year. Alex [Lea], Bo [Zwiener], and Gage [Mullenbach] have meant a lot to this program. Our focus now turns to individual sections next week, and getting as many individuals to the state tournament as we can.”
The killer for Westfield against WEM/JWP was the lighter weights where the Grizzlies took a 19-6 lead through 133 pounds.
Zwiener and Mullenbach brought the score back to 19-18 by earning back-to-back pins before Cannon Wacek regained the lead for the team by scoring a 4-1 overtime decision win.
Wacek’s big win pushed the score to 21-19, but the lead would not last long.
WEM/JWP earned three consecutive wins from 160-189 pounds and added a critical 13 points to lead 32-21.
Lea gave Westfield a chance by earning a pin at 215 pounds to cut the lead to five points and give 285-pounder Wyatt Arndt a shot at a potential dual-winning pin, but the storybook ending was not in the cards.
Instead, Arndt ran into two-time state champion Keegan Kuball, who swiftly iced the dual with a first-period fall.
