We Just Disagree

I have a friend, Shawn Haley. We grew up together and attended high school and played on some of the same teams. I always liked Shawn. He was one of those guys who seemed to know where he was going in life at an early age. He took and excelled in those higher classes that I never could master.
The interesting thing about Shawn and myself is we rarely agreed on…well anything. We were as opposite as two people could be. We have always been friend, though.
Last week, I made a post on Facebook concerning a particular subject. I was pretty passionate about what was on my mind. So I wrote my post, sent it off the Facebook and it sat there for several hours.
When I went back to check on the status, I saw Shawn had posted a response. I pretty much knew what he was going to say. Sure enough, he took the polar opposite view as I had. Problem for me is Shawn is much smarter than me and he made a lot of sense of his position and was as passionate as me.
So there we were, two 52-year old men with families of our own, with our heels dug in on what we believed was the right point-of-view on this subject. We’d been friends since we were 14! So what did we do on the fiery issue?
Nothing.
We didn’t scream at each other. We didn’t go back and forth on this one subject.
Here’s what we did…we agreed to disagree. I explained my point of view, Shawn explained his point of view. Like I said, Shawn is much smarter than me and he made some great points.
Ultimately, we shook hands through cyberspace and moved on with respect.
