Vikings Shutout Falcons

The Wabasha-Kellogg Falcons fought hard and kept the game close in the first half, but the Hayfield football team scored 12 points in the second half en route to a 19-0 victory on Friday, Sept. 20.

“On our first touchdown drive, we executed our gameplan and cut down on the mental mistakes, missed assignments, and eliminated our penalties and subsequently we had a very solid drive for our first touchdown,” he said.
He was also impressed with his defense’s performance.
“Our defense came out ready to go and knew their assignments. They knew their assignments and they executed them throughout the game. We gave up 72 yards on the night and 34 of them came on one play in which we nearly had an interception,” he said.
While the defense played well throughout the game, the Vikings offense struggled a bit in the first half and Hayfield led just 7-0 at halftime.
“At halftime, we talked about how we needed to do a better job of limiting our mental errors that led to penalties and missed blocking assignments in the first half.”
Snider mentioned that his team did a good job fixing those first half issues.
“We came out in the second half and made the adjustments of eliminating those two things and had a much more successful second half”
He noted that the offense was able to move the chains much more effectively.
“The offense did a great job of moving the ball. We were able to do a lot of things with them,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Vikings’ defense continued to shut down Wabasha-Kellogg’s offense in the second half.
“I thought our defense played pretty well. We had a couple mistakes that led to a couple gains that didn’t need to happen, but in general our defense did a great job,” he said. “I really was impressed with our defensive line. Coach Schroeder has been working hard with them, getting them to execute the plan and it really showed what our defensive line can do.”
The defensive line played well, but Snider singled out senior defensive lineman Kolby Tapp for having a really good game.
“He was all over the place on defense,” he said.
While Tapp and the defense thrived, he said the offense could still make some improvements, especially when they get into the red zone.
“We will work on finishing our drives off these next couple weeks,” he said.
The Vikings will look to improve on finishing their drives when they go on the road to take on Winona Cotter/Hope Lutheran/Riverway at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27.
