Uniting for a Cause

The annual KoMets vs. Cancer campaign is off and running.
More than $2,200 was raised during a Dodge County Wildcats girls hockey game on Jan. 26, the initial event sponsored by Kasson-Mantorville High School winter sports and activities programs.
Upcoming events include a K-M wrestling match (Thursday, Feb. 8), a girls basketball game Friday, Feb. 9, and a boys basketball game Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The boys basketball, dance team, Family Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), girls basketball, powerlifting, Wildcat girls hockey, HOSA Future Health Professionals club and wrestling teams combine each year to help fight cancer, in conjunction with the Dodge County Relay for Life.
Each event features a silent auction, during which fans can bid on donated items; and “walking tacos” will be sold for $5 (co-sponsored by Taher Food Services). All money raised benefits the Relay for Life.
Just more than $20,000 was raised during the 2017 event. This year’s goal is to raise $15,000, coordinator Michele Lindquist said.
“It’s just progressively become more popular,” she said. “It’s kind of a fun way to raise money and get kids involved towards a good cause.”
K-M Elementary School students are selling tickets for the “best seat in the house” for the school’s spring concert, K-M Middle Schoolers have participated in “Relay for Life” walks during school, and high school students are selling suckers.
A teacher’s name is drawn from a bucket for every $200 raised. That teacher will receive a pie in the face.
“That’s incentive for kids to keep raising money,” Lindquist said.
Other events include community suppers, “pink-outs” (girls hockey players wore pink colors in support of the battle against cancer) and the creation of a Memorial Wall. Students also are selling t-shirts.
This year’s KoMets vs. Cancer motto: “Together, we are strong.”
“I think it’s just really great that everybody in every grade level is coming together for one cause,” said K-M junior Cole Kundert, an FCCLA club member.
