Triton Reading Corps helps youngsters meet state mandates

Educators agree on the importance of a student being able to read at grade level by third grade; in fact, that is one of the standards of learning in Minnesota. Those are the grades where students are learning to read, after third grade they are reading to learn.
Still, locally, statewide and nationally there are challenges in meeting that goal.
To help all Triton Elementary students meet that goal, the Triton school district instituted the Reading Corps program in the 2018-19 school year.
A group of volunteers meets several times a week with students in kindergarten through third grade who need extra help in their reading, said Sheryl Pischke, who coordinates the program.
Amanda Reynick focuses on kindergarten students, although she also works with older students. Nan Babcock and Val Langworthy work with first through third graders. Approximately 50 youngsters are currently in the program.
