‘Tis the season to hunker down?

Thanksgiving is behind us. Yes, millions of U.S. citizens took to airports, highways and visited with family and friends over Thanksgiving. All of us were warned that there would be an extreme spike following the holiday.
Well, my wife and I thought it was worth the risk to venture to Maple Grove where our middle daughter, Erica and husband, Scott live with three of our granddaughters. Our daughter, Carrie, and her family ventured out from Blaine to give thanks with the rest of the family.
Yes, we were warned before heading up 52 to the Cities. Yes, we were careful. Yes, we heard all of the warnings. However, being with family was more important than worrying about the virus.
We listened to a report en route that noted that Japan experienced more suicides that COVID-19 deaths in recent weeks.
Most people have either been confined to home since March when the shutdowns began and they’re frustrated. Some are desperate.
Last week the Food and Drug Administration said it would meet Dec. 10 to consider emergency approval of vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna. The recommendation and decision regarding a go-ahead with the coronavirus vaccine would then be given on Thursday, Dec. 17.
It’s all part of an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) which is a mechanism to facilitate the availability and use of medical countermeasures, including vaccines, during public health emergencies, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, according to information on the FDA website.
What? Within that one-week period, how many Americans will die because the vaccines that were created at behest of Operation Warp Speed were delayed because some bureaucrat at the FDA had a round of golf that was more important?
We’re dealing with the lives of American citizens – folks in senior care facilities, doctors, nurses and first responders. There is no time for pause. It’s time to act.
Pfizer and Modena have gone through a rigorous three tiered testing of their respective vaccines. Effectiveness of both vaccines exceeds 90 percent.
Now is not the time to withhold a viable product from the people of Dodge County, the state of Minnesota or the rest of these United States.
