Special teams power Wildcats past Hastings

In the game of hockey, there are few things that can create a momentum swing such as a power play or penalty kill. If a team is able to capitalize on a power play, it can energize a team that’s behind or give them an extra bit of confidence to make up a deficit. On the flipside, a penalty kill can also give a team the energy boost needed to win the game.
With that in mind, it’s not a surprise that the Dodge County girls hockey team has been emphasizing the importance of special teams in the early part of the season. With another pair of power play goals on Saturday afternoon, the Wildcats were able to put those lessons to good use as they defeated Hastings 3-2 for their second victory of the year.
“It’s kind of like turnovers in football,” Dodge County head coach Jeremy Gunderson explained. “Teams that limit their turnovers usually win the game and in hockey, if you can win that special teams battle, it usually shows up on the scoresheet.”
