Shaping Our Future: The Journey Toward the Profile of a Graduate

By
Nate Walbruch, Superintendent

In my first few months as Superintendent of Byron Public Schools, I have been deeply impressed by the clarity of purpose that defines this district. In November, I shared my gratitude for the community’s support of our referendum, which provided the stability needed to focus on our most important work: our students. At that time, I mentioned that we would soon begin a process to refresh our district’s strategic plan. Because our community chose to stabilize our district’s finances this past November, we now have the ‘breathing room’ to move beyond day-to-day challenges and focus on this higher-level vision for student excellence. Today, I want to share how that work is taking shape around a framework that is already a cornerstone of our district—the Profile of a Graduate.
The Profile of a Graduate should be more than just a document; it should be a promise. It identifies the specific skills and character traits we believe every Byron student should possess by the time they walk across the graduation stage. We know that while academic mastery opens doors, it is these ‘durable skills’, like being able to collaborate on a team or think critically through a problem, that ensure our graduates thrive in their careers and contribute meaningfully to our community. We are committed to fostering these six core competencies in every student: Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.
Our strategic direction for the coming years is clear: we are moving from having a framework that is in parts of our district to one that is fully integrated into every classroom, every student’s experience and how the professionals of the District conduct their work. To do this effectively, we must first understand exactly where we are today.
Between now and the end of the school year, we are engaging in an intensive period of listening, observing, and analyzing. This effort is not about starting over; it is about establishing a “launch point” for our future growth. To build this baseline, I am personally engaging in several key activities:
Listening to Our Stakeholders: I am meeting with focus groups including students, staff, School Board members, district leadership, and community members.
Analyzing Progress: We are reviewing previous community surveys and examining “artifacts”—real-world examples of how the Profile of a Graduate is currently being implemented.
Evaluating Student Work: We are looking closely at student projects and assignments across all grade levels to see how they are demonstrating these core competencies in practice.
Your Voice Matters
This process relies on the lived experiences of our community. If you are a business owner who has hired a Byron graduate, a parent who has seen these skills grow in your child, or a community member with a perspective on how these six competencies translate to success after high school, I invite you to connect with me directly. Your stories help us understand the real-world impact of our work.
Additionally, over the coming weeks, some of you may receive specific invitations to participate in focus groups or feedback sessions. If you receive one of these invitations, I strongly encourage you to participate. Your perspectives are essential in helping us understand how these graduate traits are showing up beyond our school walls.
This process is about alignment. We want to ensure that whether a student is in kindergarten at Byron Primary School or a senior at Byron High School, their education is intentionally designed to help them become the well-rounded, capable citizens our community expects.
Byron is a district that values both tradition and progress. By sharpening our focus on the Profile of a Graduate, we are honoring the high standards of our past while purposefully preparing every student for “what’s next.” I look forward to hearing from you and sharing more about what we learn during this discovery phase. As always, thank you for your partnership and your unwavering support of Byron Public Schools.
