Penny: Best still ahead

“After thoughtful reflection and with immense gratitude,” Tim Penny, the president and CEO of Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation since 2007, has announced he is stepping down.
“It has been an incredible privilege to serve this organization for nearly 18 years,” Penny said in a statement, “working alongside dedicated colleagues and partners to advance SMIF’s mission of fostering economic growth, early childhood development and community vitality throughout southern Minnesota.”
He will remain in the role for the next few months as a successor is selected and will assist in the transition to new leadership.
“While I will be stepping down from the day-to-day leadership, I am pleased to share that I will remain connected to the Foundation as an ambassador, trusted advisor and friend, continuing to offer my insights and support in whatever ways I can,” Penny said.
SMIF, a donor-supported foundation, invests in economic growth in 20 counties of south central and southeastern Minnesota, including Dodge, Mower and Steele counties.
It has invested more than $170 million in the region since 1986.
“Leading SMIF has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Penny said, “and I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to contribute to the vibrant communities we serve.”
A resident of Owatonna, the former lawmaker spent 12 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the First District.
“As I embark on this new chapter, I want to express my deepest gratitude for the relationships I’ve built and the support I’ve received over the years,” Penny said.
“I have been truly inspired by the passion and commitment of everyone connected to SMIF, and I know the Foundation’s best years are still ahead.”
