Orphan fawn mills around tragic crash scene

A local state representative is asking for the public’s help in saving an orphan deer near the site of a fatal car wreck that killed a teacher and her young daughter.
Last week Duane Quam of Byron shared a photo with the Dodge County Independent of a fawn in the ditch along U.S. Highway 14 on the east end of Claremont where Rachel Harberts and her 8-year-old daughter, Emerson, were killed in early September. Emerson was killed instantly in the crash while her mother died a week later in the hospital.
Quam says the lonely fawn has been at the corner of Highway 14 and County Road 3 since the crash happened on Sept. 8. He said that sometimes a baby animal such as this is a symbol of a child dying.
“It gets to me every time I see it,” Quam told the DCI.
The state representative, who serves Dodge and Olmsted counties, would like some organization to help the deer survive.
