OPEN FOR BUSINESS

It was the first day of school during 2019 on Wednesday and for Hayfield Community Schools the start to the year was a exciting one.
 
On Wednesday the school held lunch in the new PreK-12 grade  cafeteria for the first time.
 
The new cafeteria is the only addition that was made from the $24 million referendum that was passed in September of 2017. While there have been and will be plenty of improvements made to the school, this project was the only thing that was built new.
 
K-12 Principal Gregg Slaathaug, explained that one of the benefits to having the new cafeteria is the fact that students will be able to sit down and eat once they get their food.
 
Before, with their set up of having a cafeteria for the elementary school and the middle/high school this wasn’t the case.
 
Another positive about the new cafeteria’s structure is the size.
 
Because of the space and layout Slaathaug explained that they are able to get kids in their faster and because of the additional space they are also able to have a lot more flexibility when it comes to schedules.
 
The best feature that Slaathaug pointed to was the lighting. Slaathaug explained that the natural lighting is great and that the kids in the schools were very impressed.
 
“I can’t tell you how many kids  came up to me today and said that they are impressed,” Slaathaug explained,
 
Overall Slaathaug said that addition of the new kitchen is a huge benefit for the students.
 
“It gives our kids something to be proud of,” he said.
 
That pride was exhibited during the first day of being open as Slaathaug had many students in every grade level come up to him and tell him how thankful they were.
 
“A lot of kids from PreK-12  thanked me it was nice,” he said.
 
Some of the additions that will be done next year include remodels to the elementary school as well as the kitchen.
