One filing so far for Claremont mayor

One week after Claremont opened up applications for the position of mayor, one individual has indicated he would like the job.
As of Tuesday morning, Jared Sultze was the only applicant for the position, said City Administrator Elizabeth Sorg. Those interested in serving as mayor of Claremont have until 3 p.m. on Jan. 27 to submit an application. Applications can be picked up at City Hall or one can call.
Two months after the November election residents of Claremont still do not know who the mayor will be. But they do know how the next mayor will be chosen.
Claremont’s City Council met last Tuesday night, named Councilmember Ryan Hedberg as the acting mayor and voted to accept applications for the mayoral position immediately. Applications must be submitted at City Hall by 3 p.m. on Jan. 27. Applications can be picked up at City Hall or can be sent to individuals who call and request it.
The applications will be reviewed by the City Council which will then chose the mayor, presumably at the regular February meeting.
The drama over who will be the mayor of Claremont began when write-in candidates Casey Striver defeated incumbent Mayor Tasha Dahlin the November election.
Soon after the election questions were raised about Striver residency in the city and the council instructed City Attorney Mark Rahrick to make a determination as to whether Striver met the residency requirements.
After his investigation, Rahrick informed the council it was opinion that Striver was not a resident of Claremont and at the December meeting the council withheld certification of his election.
At the January organizational meeting, the council appointed Councilman Ryan Hedberg as the acting mayor and made the decision to accept applications for the position and choose a mayor from among the applicants.
At the January meeting all council members stated they were not interested in the position and earlier Dahl had said she would not consider being appointed to the position by the council.
