Fire destroys Kasson home on July 4th

A couple and their dog have been displaced after a fire destroyed their Kasson home on July 4.
No one was injured in the fire, which took place at 1103 6th Ave. SE, said Kasson Fire Chief Joe Fitch, at around 7:30 p.m. Responding to the fire were the Kasson Fire Department, Dodge Center Fire and Mutual Aid. The Kasson Police Department, Dodge County Police Department and Dodge Center Ambulance services also responded to the holiday fire.
“If people want to help, they can drop off cash donations or gift cards to Wal-Mart, Target, and Kwik Trip at Ziebell Law Office in the Kasson mini mall,” said Tanya Young, advisory lead for the Dodge County Salvation Army who is helping care for the fire victims.
The couple who was affected declined housing services as they had friends to stay with, Young said. Both Young and Fitch declined to provide the names of the people displaced by the fire.
The fire took place at the South Fork subdivision behind the Kasson Kwik Trip. The cause of the fire is not yet known, Fitch said. The fire started on the deck and spread inside.
“The fire did start on the exterior of the home on the back deck,” Fitch said, “spreading quickly to the interior kitchen and attic spaces were fully engulfed when we arrived on the scene.”
Fitch said the house is “a total loss” due to fire, heavy smoke damage and water damage.
Young said the couple affected is overwhelmed with phone calls at the moment, but as the Salvation Army determines their needs, will put out a call for community aid at that time.
