More gems added to history
Mantorville’s 50th Marigold Days Celebration is rich in traditions, whether it be the flower show, the grand parade or the flea market. A more recent tradition is recognizing individuals who have made substantial contributions to the community.
Each year, the Mantorville Economic Development Authority (EDA) solicits nominations from the public and makes the final selection of two Gems of Mantorville, one from the past and one from the present.
EDA Chair Karl Huppler says this year had a couple of strong nominees in both categories; however, he described this year’s candidates as “no brainers.”
This year’s historical gem is Walt Bruzek,(1907-1981) who is celebrated as a major force in starting Marigold Days. “Since this is the 50th celebration it is only fitting that Walt be recognized for the gem that he was,” Huppler said of Bruzek’s nomination.
