Triton thrashes Winona-Cotter

During the grind of a season, it can be hard to keep a team focused week in and week out. This leads to what some people call “trap games” as a team that might not be playing as well can come out of nowhere and score an upset.
On Thursday night, the Triton Cobras were in a game that could have been considered a trap. They traveled to Winona Cotter, who had gotten off to a rough 0-2 start to the season. If the Cobras took them lightly, it could have derailed their 2-0 start and have them wondering what happened several hours later.
Fortunately, for the Cobras, there was no let down as they crushed the Ramblers 64-6. Triton never let Cotter get off the ground in the game, as they scored 29 first-quarter points and stayed on the accelerator until the end of the third quarter.
“You want to focus on yourselves a little more,” Triton head coach Don Henderson said about the game. “You need to make sure your kids are playing up to their full potential.”
It didn’t take long for that to happen as Leif Bungum took the opening kickoff, ran through a hole big enough for a semi-truck could go through and ran 82 yards to put the Cobras up 7-0. 
Triton didn’t let up on the next drive as Hunter Jennings began his big night with an interception. While his return, which went for a touchdown, was called back on a penalty, he wound up with major contributions on both ends of the field while replacing an injured Carson Johnson.
“He had to step in and he did really well,” Henderson said of the sophomore Jennings, who finished the night with seven tackles to go with his interception. “At the least, he’s earned the opportunity to keep getting on the field and helping out.”
The Cobras would make up for their own mistake on the next play when Jax Bryngelson found Garret Dahms for a 40-yard touchdown pass, making it 14-0.
After Cotter went three-and-out on their next drive, the Ramblers snapped the ball high over their punter’s head. Triton would recover and Max Henderson would finish off the drive with a touchdown run to make it 22-0 Cobras after a two-point conversion.
After a Cotter touchdown made it 22-6, Jax Bryngelson ran in for his second overall touchdown of the night and it resulted in a 29-6 lead for Triton at the end of the first quarter.
Overall, the offense was incredibly efficient for the Cobras. Triton would go on to score seven touchdowns on just 16 plays in the first half and that allowed the team to cruise to their third straight victory to open the season.
The Cobras should get a tougher task next week as Caledonia (3-0) comes to town. Both teams find themselves on top of the SFA White Division and this game could be a deciding factor in who comes away with a conference championship.
