The Kasson-Mantorville Youth Football Association sponsored a very successful youth football camp last week with 108 kids from grades 2-6 participating in the three-day camp. Rochester John Marshall graduate and Minnesota Viking Marcus Sherels was a special guest clinician at the camp on the final day last Wednesday. Sherels was on special teams for the Vikings last season and did get to see some action as a defensive back. The camp was run by current and former players, college players and K-M coaches. The focus was on position technique, speed and agility work, teamwork, and discipline.
Rebekah Hart is from Elgin, but she is a member of the Dodge County Young Riders. She competed in the 4-H horse show for the first time at the Dodge County Fair and also did well in the projects building. has written six books and the first was “Misty of Chincoteague”. The Chincoteague come from Assateague Island, separated by a fence at the Maryland-Virginia border. Rebekah said the Marguerite Henry books are fiction, however there are true parts of the book. The books inspired her to purchase two mares from Wisconsin and a stallion from Arkansas. The family is in the process of breeding the horses.

Kasson Culligan celebrated 40 years in business here with an open house last Friday. Dan Driessen, president of the Driessen Culligan stores which include Kasson, Owatonna, Waseca, Northfield, Montevideo and Benson in Minnesota and six more stores outside the state. Eugene Driessen is the founder of Driessen Culligan and he purchased the Kasson dealership in 1962 from the Kirkwood family. The Kasson plant serves many commercial accounts throughout the Midwest including IBM, Mayo Clinic and Pemstar. Culligan is best known for carrying a full line of water treatment systems including softeners, drinking water systems, iron filtration, bottled water and has a salt delivery service.
A new event for the Kasson Festival In the Park will be a Belly Flop Contest Saturday, August 10. The contest will take place at the municipal swimming pool in Veterans Memorial Park at 4:30 p.m. Contestants competing must wear a costume. Prizes will be awarded to the best belly flopper and for the best costume. Crowd applause will determine the best costume and a panel of judges will be on hand to determine the best belly flopper. This is an event you won’t want to miss-as an observer or as a participant. If you’re interested in competing you must be 18 or older. Contact Bill Stromme at (507)634-4022.

Mary Andrist, second place winner in the Region IV International Humorous Speech Contest, will be the guest speaker at Riverview Center on Thursday, July 23 at 7:00 p.m. Andrist will be speaking before a gathering of members of the Rochester Area Alliance for the Mentally Ill (RAAMI) and the Circle Center. The public is invited. A potluck picnic at 6:00 p.m. will precede the talk. People are invited to bring a dish to share, plus their own beverages and utensils. Riverview Center is located at 47 13 ½ St. N.W. in Rochester. Admission is free. Andrist is a member of the Pine Island Toastmasters Club. Her wins of the Area 73, Southern Division and District 6 Toastmasters Humorous speech contests put her in the regional competition. 
In the Kasson Adult Park and Recreation softball league this year there are 40 teams. With the regular season schedule winding down, only one of those teams has not lost a game. The West Concord Merchants are the leaders in the Men’s ‘C’ Division with a 10-1 record. Not far behind in the league standings are the Kasson Merchants/Mizuno and Byron Merchants at 9-1 each and Bigelow Enterprises and OCLM no. 1 at 8-2. Four teams are within two games of the leader, making this one of the closer league contests. In the men’s Class ‘D’ Division, Handyman Services has a 9-1 record. Not far behind at 8-2 are Kasson Karpets and Young Guns. In the women’s standings one-half game separates the top two teams. Kasson Legion is at 8-1 and Cellular 2000 is 7-1-1. Less than two games back is H&H Underground at 6-2-1. Listed are the scored and standings thru Thursday.
