The K-M youth baseball U15 team improved to 5-2 in league play with a 9-7 win over Kenyon last Monday night. The U14 and U15 teams are now combined so they get to play at the same level for two years. Coach Steve Ehlke said this is a good opportunity for the younger kids (U14) to compete with youth a year older because it only makes them that much better when they are a year older. The assistant coaches are Scott Stedman, Paul Knutson and Mike Yeigh.
School may be out for the summer, but that does not mean facilities at the schools are not being used. One of the activities at KMTelecom Field has been a speed, strength and agility camp for athletes offered for the fourth consecutive year by K-M Middle School teacher Erik Myran. The camp is designed to benefit athletes from all sports. Students participating are expected to have the edge in conditioning over others who start a fall sport without the camp.

Tia Dorschner, daughter of Alan and Lois Dorschner of Mantorville, studied in Spain during spring semester 2002 through the Center of International Education at the College of Saint Benedict/ Saint John’s University. Dorschner is a junior elementary education major at CSB. Segovia served as the site for the Spanish study program. There the students surrounded themselves with Spanish art, culture, history, politics and language. Courses were taught in Spanish, adjusted to the learner’s proficiency. The cities, castles, churches and museums served as ‘classrooms’ for the program’s professors. The program’s main focus was to allow students to further their training in the Spanish language and culture.
There will be no cover charge for all of the live entertainment in the beer garden during the Dodge County Free Fair this year. In the past there has been a cover charge. Dodge County Fair Board President Larry Schaefer said they have had a few complaints in charging a cover charge when there is live music in the beer garden during the fair. This year the fair board decided to do away with the cover charge. Wednesday, July 17 there will be Karaoke from 8:30-12:30, Thursday local band Corduroy Money will be playing country rock from 8:30-12:30, Friday Adam’s Eve plays from 8:30-12:30, Saturday the Chaser Straight rock & roll band will play from 8:30-12:30 and Sunday, July 21 there will be live music from 8:30-10 p.m.

Festival In the Park will once again be having a teen dance sponsored by city of Kasson and Kasson-Mantorville Jaycees. The dance will be held at the fairgrounds on Saturday, August 8th, 8 p.m. to midnight. Music will be provided by Gemini On Wheels. Pop can be purchased at the dance. Admission is free.
Students participating in the Zumbro Education District (ZED) summer program at the Kasson Elementary were treated to a special guest last week. Storyteller Mary Haase went from classroom to classroom telling stories to attentive audiences. Julie Schuller, hearing impaired instructor for the ZED District, presented the stories in sign language as Mary read. Students from Byron, Kasson, Mantorville, Pine Island and Stewartville benefitted from the summer reading program.

Pastor and Mrs. Richard Johnson and family of the First Baptist Church, Kasson returned home on Sunday from a trip to California for vacation and to attend the annual meeting of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, which met in San Diego, June 26 to 30. The theme of the conference was “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” taken from Isaiah 6:8. Others attending from Kasson were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Patton and Mr. and Mrs. Vic Scott and family.
The annual Fourth of July picnic sponsored by the Luther League of South Zumbro Lutheran was held at the George Evjen picnic grounds. A fifteen-minute service at 11:45 a.m. opened with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. Galen Johnson led in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag followed by Scripture Reading and prayer. A ten voice men’s chorus sang “America” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Pastor Krieg brought a brief meditation on “The Forward Look of Freedom.” At noon the congregation partook of potluck dinner. A full afternoon of recreation completed the day for young and old in softball, volleyball, and horseshoes.
