Hayfield teen dies in crash on way to school

Funeral services were held Monday for a 16-year-old Hayfield High School student who died Jan. 20, in a crash involving her vehicle and a semi-truck.
Macy Holtan, was on her way to school when her car, a 2010 Honda Accord, slid on an icy curve and crashed into a semi-truck, according to Dodge County Sheriff Scott Rose. She was extricated from her vehicle by Hayfield Fire and Rescue and transported by Mayo One to Saint Marys in Rochester where she died from her injuries.
Macy, a sophomore at the school, the daughter of Justin and Nichole Holtan, was active in a variety of school activities, where she was described as an excellent student, a member of the Hayfield FFA Chapter, golf team and participated in the performing arts.
School officials said they implemented their crisis management plan in the aftermath of Macy’s death and would continue to provide support for the students and staff.
“The entire district is saddened to our core and express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends,” said Supt. Gregg Slaathaug.  “At this time we are respecting the privacy of the family and the ability of the family and community to mourn the loss of an outstanding student and person. We have implemented our Crisis management plan providing all necessary supports for students and staff and will continue to do so as long as needed.”
Services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield, where she was a member, with Rev. Paul Hauschild officiating.
