PEM Bulldogs conquer KM KoMets

KM Girls Soccer played on their home turf this game night in honor of Aidan Hegge, a classmate and a friend who left us too early. The girls played for suicide awareness. September was National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to share stories and shed light on this topic. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) uses the month of September to reach out to those affected by suicide, to raise awareness, and to connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. The KM KoMets and PEM Bulldogs had a long repetitive game. There was not much action and it took a while for something to happen. However, it was really fascinating with the amount of corner kicks that took place. There were ten corner kicks total in this game, seven of them for the KoMets and three for the Bulldogs. Ten corner kicks in one game of soccer is around the average for League matches but it definitely feels like this was a lot more than usual. 
There was some activity when a Bulldog went to shoot, but KM goalie, Lizzie Johnson dove to block it and she was successful. However, the ball was rolling towards another Bulldog and when they kicked it, it rolled slowly towards the net but, thankfully for the KoMets, it sat right on the edge, not counting as a goal. 
There was some hope for a second for the KoMets when they got a corner kick and the ball bounced off a KoMets head and it went just above the net, discouraging the team. The KoMets also had a really nice line drive kick towards the goal, but the Bulldog goalie was able to prevent them from scoring and the ball ended up over the net once more. 
Johnson had even more movement on the field when she ended up lying on the turf to block a ball; she was lucky as it trickled away, but she had barely a second to try and pop back up to block a rebound kick that another Bulldog was planning. Johnson was thriving as she had blocked two attempts at a score in less than fifteen seconds. 
It was finally the end of the first half of the slow game and the scoreboard still read 0-0. There were a couple close ones for both teams this night where the ball would just barely miss the netting. Both goalies didn’t have much excitement, but when they were encountered, they blocked very well. 
Eventually, Bulldog #19 snuck one in the goal with only half an hour of the game left. KoMets didn’t think anything of it as there was plenty of time left, but unfortunately for them, the night didn’t go as planned. They were so close with a few minutes left, but once again, the ball did not make contact with the net. The buzzer soon went off signaling the end of the game, PEM Bulldogs won 1-0.
