A Glimpse of Steele County

There is a lot of controversial issues and breaking news going on in Steele County or close to Steele County in the case of the feedlot dilemma in Westfield Township.
I’ve worked at larger city newspapers, and at times have been inundated with tough issues and decisions that boards and others have had to make. I have also been involved in covering disaster stories.
Here in Steele County, take the public works building. That started in 2010 after a devastating flood that rocked the area. Now in 2015, the Steele County Board of Commissioners is starting to move forward.
The feedlot story has been in the news for a few months now and is not going away. On Monday, Westfield Township was expected to make a decision on whether or not to handle zoning issues themselves.
Now the H5N2 (Avian Influenza) has hit one of our own here in Steele County. I’m sure that story will be on the minds of many over the next few weeks.
Just take today’s issue. You can read about the Avian flu hitting Steele County and a former Blooming Prairie resident that has had a gender reassignment. Then of course there is the ongoing issue of the county public works building and another story about a county highway worker’s grievance issue.
The point is that as a weekly newspaper, our staff continues to keep on top of all of these issues and other breaking news that hits our area in a timely manner. It can be a chore at times, but we believe it is important to keep our readers aware of these issues and challenges.
