ENJOYING THEIR MOMENT

Last year, the Kasson-Mantorville girls golf team saw great success out on the course. With Elizabeth Fagerlind advancing to the state tournament in her freshman year and sophomore (now junior) Ashley Johnson missing out on a playoff hole, the KoMets saw enough balance along with Molly Sorensen and Annabel Smith to advance to the second day of the Section 1AA Tournament  as a team.
The accomplishment was a big one for the KoMets and while they were excited about playing with the likes of area powerhouses Red Wing, Rochester Lourdes and La Crescent, they were even more exciting about being able to play together as a team for one more day.
“It was really great because usually when one of us would advance to the day, they would just come down and cheer us on,” Johnson said. “Seeing us all advance and to go as a team was really fun.”
“Usually we just had YouTube going when we were sitting in the back watching,” Smith recalled. “It was great to be able to participate on the second day and be able to play.”
That kind of support whether they’re on or off the course is what has helped breed the KoMets success. Most of the girls on the team have played together since they were younger kids with Fagerlind and Johnson playing since their eighth- grade seasons, Sorensen since her freshman year and Smith enjoying her first full-time year last season.
Spending that amount of time together has helped this quartet of KoMets know their strengths and their weaknesses from the senior Sorensen to the youngest member of the group, Fagerlind.
“We’re all very different and we have a huge variety in our scores,” Sorensen said. “Each of us has different strengths and we learn from each other and from that, we get better
in different areas we may struggle in from time to time.”
“We just try our best every meet and do our best to encourage the girls,” Fagerlind said. “Even though most of the girls are older then me, I still try to keep their spirits high. We just have good people to fall back on.”
That support system also extends off the course where the girls have become tight knit friends. Johnson mentioned that if you were to stop by Hu Hot in Rochester on the weekends, there’s a good chance they would be there and when asked about their goals for the upcoming season, they were just as focused on having fun on the course as they are with advancing to the second day of sections and making it to the state tournament as a team.
“We just try not to take it too seriously,” Smith said. “We just have fun on the course. Obviously, we’re trying to get to state, but it’s not the most important thing. For us, the most important thing is to go out and have fun on the course."
