Pursue S.M.A.R.T. Dreams

You can see people chase their dreams every Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

That’s because America’s Got Talent (AGT) returned to NBC for its 12th season.

I think one of the main reasons so many people enjoy that show is because we see people pursuing their dreams and rising to the occasion.

Their performances are often accompanied by some background information about how they got into their talent and/or how long they’ve been practicing.

Some of them have dedicated thousands of hours to their craft for this one chance in front of a national audience.

Those same principles of dedication and steadfastness are applicable to almost everyone’s dream.

However, I think most people are intimidated by the scale of their dreams and don’t know how to get started.

My advice is to start with smaller goals and work towards a larger dream. You can do this by following the acronym S.M.A.R.T.

‘S’ stands for specific. Do you have a clear goal?

‘M’ is for measurable. How will you know that you’re moving closer to your goal?

‘A’ is for attainable. If you put in the necessary effort, can you achieve your goal?

‘R’ stands for realistic. Are you willing and able to achieve your goal?

‘T’ is for timely. What is your time frame for getting this goal accomplished?

Your dream won’t just happen overnight, so setting up some plan like S.M.A.R.T. goals is one way to initiate action that will move you closer to your dream.

I believe that an innate part of the human spirit is that we want others to succeed, so be willing to ask others for help. Once family and friends know how important something is to you, they should do whatever they can to help you pursue your goals.

I encourage all of us to go after our dreams in the same way the performers on AGT are doing.

After all, you’ll never know whether or not you can achieve your dream unless you start somewhere.
