KoMets win big with Epilepsy Awareness Game

When it comes to sports, the figures that everybody will remember at the end of the day are wins and losses. However, the world of sports can offer so much more when a community comes together and supports a great cause.
The Kasson-Mantorville girls soccer team did just that on Saturday afternoon when they hosted an Epilepsy Awareness Game when they took on St. Peter. The KoMets were able to score a victory over the Saints on Saturday, but the bigger story was what was going on off the field as the team was able to raise awareness of the challenges that Epilepsy can bring and funds that can help people get through this tough medical condition.
K-M girls soccer head coach Chris Soderberg knows this too well as his daughter Hannah has been suffering from seizures since she was four years old. After multiple complications and a long hospital stay, her condition has changed the way she lives and how his family functions.
“We’re still dealing with it on a daily basis,” Soderberg said. “She’s home with us in a wheelchair and there’s a lot of complications. But, it’s an ongoing battle with my child and it’s something that hits home.”
The K-M community acts as a family when one of its own has some trouble and on Saturday afternoon they did just that. Alumni, parents and former players showed up to show their support. There were also several other ways that they got involved by buying t-shirts, raffle tickets for a ball signed by the varsity team and bracelets that were inscribed with “Rise Above Seizures.” All of this made the game more of a success than what was happening on the field.
“The epilepsy benefit was tremendous,” Soderberg confirmed. “This community has supported my family so much in the past nine years. I expected this to be a great day. All sorts of people came in from out of town and our booster club led
