David Harold Dobbs, 57, Wasioja

David Harold Dobbs, 57, of Wasioja passed away at home on Father’s Day, June 19, 2016, after a year-and-a-half fight against a rare neuroendocrine cancer.   
David was born on Feb. 22, 1959, in Prairie du Chien, Wisc., to Montana (Monte) and the late Harold Dobbs. He grew up along the Mississippi river in Prairie du Chien, Wisc., Brownsville, Minn., and New Albin, Iowa.  He attended high school in Lansing, Iowa, where he was better known as Freddy.  He married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Bulman, at an outdoor ceremony in rural New Albin, Iowa, on July 22, 1978.  Together they raised their children Luke, Matt and Jen in Wasioja, Minn. 
David worked at Meyer Sawmill, Dee Implement, The Moore Farm in New Albin, Iowa, and Northern Engraving in Lansing, Iowa, all while attending middle school and high school.  He later worked at Alberts Underground Cable in Owatonna, Curt Robertson Block-laying in Owatonna, and Brian and Craig Busch Concrete Construction in Claremont. In 1983, he started his own concrete construction company-Dobbs Construction with business partner Ed Bronner in Dodge Center.  From 1987 until the time of his death, David and his wife Jeanne were owners of Dobbs Construction, Inc. in Dodge Center.  Both sons have proudly worked with their Dad since high school and continue to run the business. 
David’s greatest joy was his family. He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends. With them, he enjoyed attending and cheering on his children and grandchildren at sporting events, concerts and recitals.  
He was an avid fisherman and hunter; deer hunting, turtle trapping in Wisconsin, moose hunting in Canada, hunting trips out west, fishing trips to Alaska, ice fishing, and fishing anywhere he thought the fish were biting.  David shared his hunting and fishing skills with his children and grandchildren, passing on his love and respect for Mother Nature to them.  He celebrated life wherever he was and in whatever he was doing.  
The list of his favorites is long:  Being on the water, a cold beer and good conversation, an honest day’s work pouring concrete with his sons, setting off fireworks, telling you Happy Easter any time of the year, Butterfinger candy bars, giving flowers and jewelry to Jeanne, giving nicknames, teasing and joking around, loud music at a good party, saving “free drink” bar chips, bringing home go-carts, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, duck boats, three and four wheelers and golf carts for his kids and grandkids to learn to drive and then fix, taking training wheels off, throwing sock bombs, pontooning on the lake with Jeanne and telling the great Muskie story, spending family and friend time Up North at his place by Mille Lacs Lake in Wahkon, Minn., taking his kids and grandkids out on the lake fishing, water skiing, tubin’, knee boarding and stopping at Bare-Ass Beach and living life to the fullest with lots of sunshine. 
His motto was always, “celebrate life” but he finally remarked,  “Remember, you gotta have a little rain to make a rainbow”.
David was a member of the First Congregational UCC Church in Dodge Center and Eagles Club member in Prairie du Chien, Wisc.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Dobbs; grandparents, Virgil  and Marguerite Dobbs and Henry  and Lydia LaMere; mother, Montana(Monte) Meyer;  step-father, Audie Meyer;  mother-in-law, Shirley Bulman;  close aunt  and uncle, Jeanette  and Eldon Smethurst;  close cousin, Jeff Smethurst;  infant nephew, Michael Zwart Jr.;  infant great-niece, Poppy Stevens.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jeanne; son Lucas (Heidi) and their children Colby, Reece  and Rainey of Berne;  son Matthew (Shyanne Pflaum) and Matt’s boys Kauri  and Soren;   Shyanne’s children Sereniti, Gavin  and Aryanna  of rural Mantorville; daughter Jennifer (Timothy Carver) and their baby due in Dec. of Mantorville; sisters, Susan (Jeff) Engen of Spring Grove; Pam (Wayne) Adamson of Claremont;  Julie Dobbs of Pahala, Hawaii; Kathy Meyer of Rochester; brother Jeff (Jessica) Meyer of New Albin, Iowa.; father-in-law, Robert (Marilyn) Bulman of New Albin, Iowa.; sisters-in-law, Jody (Lee) Stoltman of Winona, and Lynne (John) Burke of Burnsville; brothers-in-law, Doug (Lee Ann)Bulman of Oelwein, Iowa, Dan (Barb) Bulman of LaCrescent, Minn., and John (Jodi) Bulman of Zumbro Falls, Minn., as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held on June 24, 2016, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kasson, Minn., with Pastor Charles Schaal of the First Congregational Church, Dodge Center, officiating.  The burial was held in Wildwood Cemetery, Wasioja.
The family prefers memorials to them to distribute later according to their wishes.
