The Voice’s Perkins encourages KM students

Kat Perkins had one simple, yet important question.
“What would you be doing if you weren’t afraid?” Perkins asked the students at Kasson-Mantorville Middle School and high school last week.
Perkins, a season sixth finalist on the popular show “The Voice,” spoke to the local students and faculty at both schools in hopes of inspiring them to achive their goals.
“I love going to schools and talking to the students,” Perkins said. “I want to help them reach their goals, to be unafraid.”
“I also want to help young people understand that being kind is something we all need to do. Being kind is easy, has no cost, and makes the world a better place.”
Perkins told the crowd about social media saying, “Everything you put out there is there forever. If you could get everything you’ve said online and put it on a table, would you want your grandparents, parents or your future children to see what you have said?”
Perkins explained how a Youtube video of her singing in an airport led to a phonecall request from the producers from “The Voice asking her to audition. It was during this time that Perkins was working as a nanny. As she wrestled wkith the decision whether or not to put herself in a vulnerable situation like the voice, the family’s five year-old looked up at her and asked, “Why wouldn’t you?”
“So I ask you guys, ‘why wouldn’t you’ go after your dreams?” Perkins said. “For me it was this little girl who made the decision easier when she asked me that question, ‘why wouldn’t you?’”
“We all have things holding us back and most of the time it is fear,” Perkins said. This helped lead into Perkins singing her song, “Fearless,” an anthem of sorts.
