Best selling author joins DCI staff

A writer who has authored a best selling book is the newest face leading the editorial team at the Dodge County Independent.
Scott Schulte of Milford, Connecticut has been named managing editor of the DCI, Publisher Rick Bussler announced. As managing editor, he will be responsible for coordinating the editorial staff and overall editorial content of the newspaper.
Within the past year, Schulte wrote a biographical book, “A Wrestling Life: The Inspiring Stories of Dan Gable.” The book has made its way onto the New York Times Best Seller list. “It has been a real pinnacle for my career,” Schulte said of his best selling book.
Prior to writing the book, Schulte worked as a sports editor and senior editor for newspapers and magazines in Connecticut and Utah. He also has previous experience as a producer and editor for a radio station. 
Schulte is an award-winning journalist. His coverage of the Connecticut Lottery shooting earned him the Headliner Award from the Associated Press. In 2010, he won an award for coverage of the Warhola murders in Utah. He has also earned honors for best sports column, sports pages and best crime story while working in Utah.
He has experience covering some major news stories, including the 1996 TWA Flight 800 crash near New York. He has also done coverage of the Columbine school shootings. 
Covering major stories makes “it feel like you are on the front lines of something big,” Schulte said. 
But it’s not only the major stories that fuels Schulte’s desire for being a journalist. “I love to tell people’s stories,” he said, noting he loves to focus on regular folks that he comes across in daily life.  “My theory is everybody has a story and I want to tell those stories.”
Schulte is excited to joining the DCI staff. “I have found this paper to be more action oriented and forward thinking than other newspapers,” he said. “I like the stability and the direction of the paper,” he added.
In addition to his love for journalism, Schulte has a passion for sports. He has had an extensive and successful high school coaching career in wrestling, cross country and track. 
He graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Connecticut State University. Schulte grew up in the Connecticut area. 
He moved to the Midwest about less than two years ago. Though it is much different than living on the East coast, Schulte has taken a liking to the Midwestern lifestyle. “My time in the Midwest has been terrific and it’s based on the people I have met,” he said. 
Schulte has two grown children and two granddaughters, ages 2 and 1, who all live in Utah. “It’s my mission in life to spoil my grandkids,” he said with a smile.
