Triton senior project hits close to home
Triton senior Topanga Spencer has already decided on her senior project — a mental health awareness fundraiser walk — but it’s more than just ticking a box on the list of graduation requirements.
“I chose to do mental health because it’s something that I’ve always personally dealt with, and my close ones have as well,” Spencer said. “This is more than just a senior project to me because I want to help people and have them know that it’s OK to not be OK. I also want to have a positive impact on my community.”
The fundraiser, set for Sept. 13, will partner with NAMIwalks, which Spencer said “felt like a perfect opportunity to have and if anyone donates all donations go to NAMIwalks.
“I think it’s important to have a mental health awareness event because it’s something that everyone deals with but (is) not always the easiest to talk about,” Spencer said. “People feel like they have to hide what (they’re) going through, which is why I am hosting this event to show that you’re truly not alone and to show that they matter.”
Check-in for the event, which is called Mind Over Miles, begins at 9 a.m. at the Triton High School track; the walk is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Spencer said the event is free, open to everyone and “meant to be a welcoming space where people can walk together, connect and support mental health awareness.
“Even if you don’t want to walk, you’re encouraged to come out because your presence makes a difference,” she said.
Spencer said she hopes the event will draw a large crowd, to show others they aren’t alone when it comes to mental health struggles.
“I really hope people come out and join,” she said. “Even something as simple as showing up can make a huge difference. It shows people they’re cared for and that the community is willing to stand together.”
