Powered by Hope, Strengthened by Prevention: A Promise to Our Children

Each April, we come together as a nation to recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to shine a light on the urgent need to protect our children and uplift the systems and people working to keep them safe. This year, we unite under the powerful theme: “Powered by Hope, Strengthened by Prevention.”
Hope is more than a feeling. It’s the belief that we can build a world where children are safe, nurtured, and free to grow into their full potential. And prevention is how we get there.
Child abuse and neglect are not distant tragedies. They happen in every community, across all socioeconomic and cultural lines. According to the Minnesota Department of Child and Family Services (Tableau, 2024) 29,130 children in Minnesota were confirmed victims of abuse or neglect, but the true number is likely much higher. Behind every statistic is a child whose safety, sense of self, and future are at risk.
Child abuse is preventable. It doesn’t begin with a hotline call. It begins when families are supported before they reach a crisis point. It begins when communities rally around parents with resources, encouragement, and practical help. It begins with us.
As someone who works in child protection, I’ve seen how powerful prevention can be. When we invest in parenting education, mental health support, early childhood programs, and policies that strengthen economic security, we reduce the stressors that can lead to harm. We give parents a chance to succeed, and children a chance to thrive.
We also know that prevention is powered by hope. Hope fuels the resilience of children who have endured trauma. It fuels the determination of social workers, educators, and caregivers who walk beside families every day. And it fuels the commitment of communities that choose to care, connect, and advocate for change.
This month let’s move beyond awareness to action. Ask yourself: What can I do to prevent abuse before it starts? Can you mentor a youth? Support a parent? Speak up for funding and policies that invest in prevention?
Because the safety of children is not just a professional responsibility, it’s a collective promise. A promise that we will keep showing up, speaking out, and working together until all children are safe, supported, and loved.
We are powered by hope. We are strengthened by prevention. And together, we can build the future every child deserves.
