WC City Councilor abruptly resigns

Citing her morals and beliefs not aligning with the position any longer, West Concord City Councilor Christina Wetzstein Peterson announced her immediate resignation from the City Council on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
“I want to Thank you all for your votes in 2022 for City council. I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign from my position on the city council effective August 27, 2024,” Peterson wrote on Facebook. “It has been a honor to serve on the council and represent our community Since Jan of 2023. I wish I could have had more of a voice on the council, but it seems that isn’t allowed or taken into consideration by a few people. I ran to make the community a better place and to be a voice for our city residents and city employees. I feel my voice is not respected or heard.”
West Concord City Administrator Paula Even Trenda confirmed receipt of receiving a resignation letter from Peterson, a few minutes before the Facebook post was made.
According to Trenda, Peterson did not express concerns to her prior to her resignation.
When asked if she had any information about the reasoning for the resignation Trenda told the DCI “I don’t really know why.”
“I mean honestly she’s upset, she doesn’t have a say but she has as much say as everybody else," Trenda said. "So I guess I’m not really sure what her major concern is.
In a statement Mayor Jeffrey McCool said  I certainly wish her the best on her future endeavors and thank her for her service to the community. As for her reason to resign on the council, that is her personal decision. I feel we have a good council that will continue to serve and do what’s best for the city residents." 
When reached on Tuesday afternoon Peterson declined to comment.
“I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunities and experience I have had while serving on the council,” Peterson wrote on Facebook. “It has been a privilege to serve the community of West Concord and try to make changes in the community to improve the quality of life for our city. My morals as a person are strong and my beliefs are stronger. Unfortunately, I can no longer serve as council member when my morals and beliefs do not align with this position any longer. Thank you for the understanding and I wish the entire council continued success in their efforts to better serve our community.”
