Gall new officer at KPD

Ian Gall, a 2021 Kasson-Mantorville graduate, recently graduated from RCTC with honors for law enforcement. Gall’s education included three semesters of classes in a classroom where they go over laws, ethics and more.
The last portion of law enforcement is skills, a four-month academy from January to May. “With that, it’s everything hands on,” Gall said. “They also give us more in depth of case law and what to do in certain situations.”
Gall knew he wanted to go into law enforcement when he was in tenth grade at K-M. He was in health class when the SRO at the time, Officer Jesse Kasel, stopped in a few times for their CPR segment.
“I originally wanted to become a paramedic,” Gall said. “But after some talking with Officer Kasel—Sergeant Kasel now—law enforcement is what I wanted to do.”
Gall started at KPD July 1, but has also been reserving since Jan. 2022. “With reserves, I’m not a licensed peace officer in the state of Minnesota,” Gall said. “You’re only allowed to do certain things.”
So far Gall has been patrolling the streets and doing traffic stops. “Just the ordinary stuff,” he said. His longest shift so far was 18 hours.
Gall has thought about state patrol or DNR before, but he believes it’s much more beneficial to work in a community that you know.
Gall is happy to be working in his hometown area. “The community is very nice and they are very supportive of law enforcement,” he said. “Also knowing everyone here is a huge perk.”
Community is the most important thing for Gall as an officer. “If you’re not interacting with the community, it doesn’t really show that you care for the community,” Gall said. “The role of law enforcement is we protect and serve the community.”
National Night Out is one example of where law enforcement gets the opportunity to know their community. “Without that special bond of knowing the community,” Gall said. “It really doesn’t go anywhere.”
Gall’s current plan is to retire from KPD. “Right now, I just want to stay in this department,” he said
