June Storms Yield Disaster States: Quie
President Nixon Friday declared a major disaster for Minnesota as a result of severe storms and flooding in June which caused heavy public, private and agricultural property damage, according to First District Representative Albert H. Quie.
The declaration will permit federal fund assistance in relief and recovery efforts in six southeast Minnesota counties: Dodge, Fillmore, Houston, Olmsted, Wabasha and Winona.
Federal aid under the 1974 Disaster Relief Act will include disaster unemployment assistance for eligible persons, debris removal and the repair or restoration of damage to streets, roads, bridges and publicfacilities and utilities.
Quie, who was joined by Gov. Wendell Anderson in urging the declaration, said damage totals nearly$24 million to agriculture, $2.5 million to public property, and more than $4 million to private property.
Low-interest rate disaster loans for home owners and businesses will be made available by the Small Business Administration, and agricultural emergency loan assistance will be offered by the Farmers Home Administration.
Friday Quie contacted the office of Robert Connor, regional Federal Disaster Assistance Administration director in Chicago, who said officials will be dispatched to counties immediately to coordinate disaster assistance applications. Briefings will also be held with County Board of Commissioners.
Quie said the SBA reported a potential of 40 home and business disaster loan applications, totalling approximately $1.3 million. Another $5.4 million is expected for emergency farm loans.
Quie said public information officers will be in touch through the news media, with eligible persons seeking assistance.

Dodge Center golf open August 20-21
Dodge Center’s 24th annual open golf tournament will offer anopportunity to win a $10,000 car to its’ participants this year. The car is the prize for a hole-in-one on Number 8 in the tournament to be held August 20-21, 1994 at the Dodge Country Club.
There is an entry fee. An 18-hole qualifying round will be held August 20th with a27-hole championship flight August 21st. All other flights will be 18 holes. In case of inclement weather, the qualifying round will bereduced to 9 holes. The first 108 paid entries will be accepted.

Kasson Festival in the Park Looking for Parade Participants
Once again it is the time of year to start looking forward to the annual festival parade in Kasson. This year’s parade will be on Sunday, August 15, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The parade line-up will take on 2nd Avenue NW and will start at the pool. The parade will follow the same route as last year’s parade. There is plenty of shade along the route, so bring your lawn chairs and family and enjoy the parade.
We are once again looking forward to this year’s parade entertainment. We have Drum and Bugle Corps, Drum Corps, clowns, cheerleaders, a steam train, and many other fun and exciting entries. After the parade the Governaires Drum and Bugle Corps will entertain in the park for 30 minutes.
We are also looking for local businesses, non-profit groups, booster clubs, neighborhoods, and any other person or persons to participate in the parade. If interested in participating, call Bill Strommeat 634-4022 to get registered.
In addition to the Grand Parade at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 15, there will be the addition of a Kiddie Parade at 1:00 p.m. The Kiddie Parade will start at the pool and proceed to 4th Avenue NW. The Kiddie Parade is only 2 blocks long. Kids age 0 to 10 years old are eligible to participate. Prizes will be awarded for the top three costumes. Goodies will be provided for all participants. Kids should arrive by12:30 p.m. to begin lining up. This year’s Kiddie Parade is sponsored by the KoMette Dance Teams. If you have any questions, please call Michele Strommeat 634-4022.

Family Fun Night July 30 at St. John’s in Kasson
Summer is a time for family, community and comingtogether for fun! St. John’s Lutheran Church, 301 8th Ave. In Kasson, is inviting members of the Kasson-Mantorville and surrounding communities for a Family Fun Night on Wednesday, July 30, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This is a free event for all ages.
Activities for the evening will include food, crafts, games, music, bonfire, raffle, and a classic car gathering. If you want to show off your classic car, please arrive by 5:45 p.m.
“This is going to be a fun evening for everyone in the community to get together,” says Pastor Nirmala Reinschmidt. “We hope you’ll join us for fun, fellowship, and meeting new friends!”
