Kasson OK’d For Low-Cost Flood Insurance
The City of Kasson becomes eligible May 20 for low-cost, federally subsidized flood insurance, according to Rep. Albert H. Quie.
The city’s application was approved by James T. Lynn, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
Under the program, homes, businesses, farms, religious, and non-profit organizations, and government structures are eligible for low-cost flood insurance.
Kasson became eligible when city officials agreed to adopt land use and control measures that will minimize flood damage to future construction.
Individuals and local insurance agents may obtain policies and further information from the National Flood InsurersAssociation servicing office.

Are you cutting hay?
Although some may think it is early, this week for cutting and harvesting the highest quality first crop alfalfa. The crop itself is still in the vegetative or early bud stage, so it’s relative feed value (RFV) will be in the prime category. This is also a week that usually allows harvest with less chance of rain than we will experience in the next couple weeks (think back to the last couple years for the last week of May and first week of June). Every day of harvest delay costs points in the RFV and as a result costs dollars as more supplements may be needed to maintain optimum performance in the livestock.
The exception to cutting this week would be anu alfalfa fields that suffered from some winter damage or disease problems that have weakened the plants. If you have weakened stands, delay at least one harvest this season until the ? to ? bloom stage of maturity. That delay will let the plants build up some reserves to help it survive.
If your hay stand has a lot of grass in it, early cutting is still the time for optimum quality. Grasses lose feed valuerather quickly as that mature.
If tonnage is your goal rather than high quality, delaying harvest a week or even two will increase your tonnage. Just remember the quality will be lower and it will change your later harvesting schedules accordingly.

Buckle up for Summer Season
Motorists hitting the road at the start of the summer season should heed this warning: click it or ticket. Dodge County Sheriff’s Office will participate in Minnesota’s colossal seat belt enforcement campaign—the Safe & Sober May Mobilization, May 24-June 6.
The statewide effort aims to boost seat belt use through committed patrols of more than 430 law enforcement agencies and the State Patrol. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will coordinate the event, In November, a similar campaign resulted in more than 7000 seat belt citations.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re driving to the grocery store or across the state.” says Sheriff Thompson, “Don’t begin your trip until you are belted in.”
In Minnesota from 1998 to 2002, there were 2,572 traffic crash fatalities and over half were not wearing seat belts. During that time period in Dodge County, 23 persons died and 16 of them were unbuckled. The economic impact of unbelted deaths and injuries in Dodge County cost nearly 20million dollars.Belt use in Dodge County has since been on the increase and is currently at 80%.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aims to increase seat belt use by calling on eachstate to execute this mobilization. The Safe & Sober campaign is funded by NHTSA and administered by the OTS. The is designed to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

Southern Gospel Music coming to Mantorville
Gone Fishin’ Southern Gospel Group is coming to the Mantorville Opera House. This talented vocal group known for their rich and wonderful harmonies are easy listening voices is appearing for an exciting musical event on Sunday afternoon June 1st, 2014.
