Byron girls advance to section title game

BYRON — The top-seed Byron girls basketball team made it a no-contest last Wednesday, February 28, as they finished off the Faribault Falcons, 69-41, in Class 3A, Section 1 opening round action at Byron High School.
That set-up a Saturday appointment with the No. 5- seed Kasson-Mantorville girls, for a section semifinal showdown—where the Byron girls toppled K-M, 63-50, in the Bear’s den. That win upped Byron to 24-4 overall and sent it to the section championship game, where it meets No. 3-seed and defending section champion Stewartville, at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 8, at Mayo Civic Arena.

K-M lady hoopsters out of playoffs
AUSTIN — On Wednesday, February 28, No. 5-seed Kasson-Mantorville pulled off a slight upset, knocking off No. 4-seed Austin, 66-58, in the Class 3A, Section 1 quarterfinals at Austin High School. The KoMets got a terrific game from Makenzie Carrier, with four 3-pointers and 19 points. Teammate Keigan Cummings added 17 points. The win bumped K-M to 15-12 overall.
No. 1-seed Byron then hosted Kasson-Mantorville on Saturday, March 2, in the semifinals. Byron’s superior shot making and defense overwhelmed the No 5-seeded KoMets, 63-50, hence ending post-season play for the K-M girls. K-M juniors Makenzie Carrier and Ella Stoskopf, gave the Lady Bears some trouble, scoring 18 and 16 points, respectively. However, nobody else had more than six, which made it tough for K-M to mount a serious comeback.
