I Was Thinking... The Great Food Debate
Dears ago, the participants of a conference were debating what made Christianity unique. The participants debated back and forth. Just then C.S. Lewis came into the room and sat down. “What is everyone arguing about?” He asked. When he learned that they were debating the uniqueness of Christianity, he said: “Oh, that’s easy. It’s grace.”
What is Grace? It is the unearned, unearnable favor of God. If you have earned it, it is not grace.
Ephesians 2:8-9
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
One person summed it up this way: Every other religion is spelled: DO. It’s about what you do to make your peace with God. I’ve got to do this… I’ve got to do that… Here is the problem: When do you know when you have done enough? What if we can’t do it enough?
Christianity is not spelled DO; It’s spelled DONE.
In other words, we are made right with God by putting our faith in What Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross. When we do this, we become a child of God, and we desire to obey God not earn his love, but because we love Him.
John 14:21,23
21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” 23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. have many differences. Those that favor pie will point out that pies are more encompassing and welcoming because they are usually round. There is no beginning or no end. Cakes, however, are more stiff and rigid since they are more often square or rectangular. Pies are also more educational. Pies, like a pie graph, can be cut in halves, fourths, or any fraction easily. Those on the cake side will point out the popularity of their favorite. Cakes are the symbols of celebrations. Cakes for birthdays, weddings, graduations, baptisms, retirements and even funerals demonstrate their versatility.
Both desserts offer a wide variety of flavors and styles. Pie lovers claim they are healthier because they often are made with fruit. Apple, peach, blueberry, strawberry, cherries and even rhubarb are much healthier than something made with just flour and sugar. Cake lovers remind their opponents that they have carrot cake, banana bread and cakes are made with eggs, a natural nutritious food.
The pie people point out that cakes have an identity problem. One day they are angel food and the next day they can be devils food. And no one can even explain what a bundt cake is. They also aren’t even sure if Johnny cake is even a cake. The cake defenders point out that pies foster bad behavior.
Being pie-eyed is socially unacceptable. They even use nursery rhymes to make their point. No one ever tried to bake 4 and 20 blackbirds into a cake. What kind of example does little Jack Horner offer by sticking his thumb into a pie? And if pies are so good, why do children make them out of mud? They also sound more sinister. You get a “slice” of pie compared to a piece of cake.
Pie eaters respond to these accusations by reminding their adversaries that cake eaters have no social sympathy for the average person. The aristocrat Marie Antoinette had no empathy for the starving poor when she said, “Let them eat cake.” Besides, pies are patriotic. “As American as apple pie.”
But as with most debates, neither side is usually convinced by the arguments of their opponents. Rarely is there a winner or a loser. Both sides feel the merits of their case proves their point. Salt or pepper, butter or margarine, Coke or Pepsi, chocolate or vanilla, most minds will never be changed. Therefore, the great debates over foods will probably continue forever. And as for me, I’m glad to eat either.
